Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter from Billund in Denmark, founded his company in 1932, with the intention of encouraging inventive play and imagination in children. In the beginning, he produced stepladders however the effects of Great Depression forced him to be flexible and modify his business model. He changed his focus on the manufacturing of toys and created one of the most popular brands.
Christiansen was a nimble thinker and was quick to adopt new materials and technologies. In 1947, he became the first company to acquire an injection molding machine made of plastic in the world. This greatly enhanced the capabilities and selection of Lego products. The machine also allowed him to create a prototype which would eventually become the iconic Lego brick. The bricks were hollow at the bottom and had pegs on the top. They interlocked to allow children to create intricate structures that were far more complex than the ones made with wooden blocks from previous generations.
The 1950s were a period of expansion for the company. Godtfred Kirk Christiansen’s daughter Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen was a member of the management staff and began to modernize the company’s manufacturing techniques. The expansion also included the launch of a line dollhouses, furnishings and individual Minifigures. In 1979, the company expanded its product line to include sets with astronaut minifigures as well as rockets. They also introduced lunar rovers, spaceships and spaceships.
In 1990, the company launched three Model Team sets that were intended for advanced builders. These sets included small parts such as levers, axles, gears, and other parts. They were the first Lego sets to offer a level of realism and precision.
